Surgical training in the United Kingdom has always been known to be very competitive and challenging. The trend in the competitive ratio from 2011-2013 appeared to be declining: from an average of 3.7:1 in 2011 and 1.9:1 per core surgical post in 2013 as per listed in CSNRO website. However, this is not a reason to not prepare for your surgical training applcation.

Higher surgical training has been proven to be much more difficult to obtain due to the limited amount of posts and vacancies. The competition rate in Higher Surgical training is more competitive than in Core Surgical Training as evidenced by the difference in ratio of applicants to posts. For example, in 2010, the ratio of candidates per surgical post was 7:1 and in 2014, it was 3:1.

This guide will mainly focus on providing the essential information for Higher Surgical Training applications, however, guides for Core Surgical Training will also be covered briefly in the begining of each section. Click the boxes to navigate around the guide.
